Not an original reflection, but wonderful words for every saint on safari:

The Breastplate of St. Patrick
I bind unto myself today
the strong Name of the Trinity,
by invocation of the same,
the Three in One, and One in Three.
I bind this day to me forever,
by power of faith, Christ’s Incarnation;
his baptism in the Jordan river;
his death on cross for my salvation;
his bursting from the spiced tomb;
his riding up the heavenly way;
his coming at the day of doom:
I bind unto myself today.
I bind unto myself the power
of the great love of cherubim;
the sweet “Well done” in judgment hour;
the service of the seraphim;
confessors’ faith, apostles’ word,
the patriarchs’ prayers, the prophets’ scrolls;
all good deeds done unto the Lord,
and purity of virgin souls.
I bind unto myself today
the virtues of the starlit heaven,
the glorious sun’s life-giving ray,
the whiteness of the moon at even,
the flashing of the lightning free,
the whirling wind’s tempestuous shocks,
the stable earth, the deep salt sea,
around the old eternal rocks.
I bind unto myself today
the power of God to hold and lead,
his eye to watch, his might to stay,
his ear to hearken to my need;
the wisdom of my God to teach,
his hand to guide, his shield to ward;
the word of God to give me speech,
his heavenly host to be my guard.
[Against the demon snares of sin,
the vice that gives temptation force,
the natural lusts that war within,
the hostile men that mar my course;
of few or many, far or nigh,
in every place, and in all hours
against their fierce hostility,
I bind to me these holy powers.
Against all Satan's spells and wiles,
against false words of heresy,
against the knowledge that defiles
against the heart's idolatry,
against the wizard's evil craft,
against the death-wound and the burning
the choking wave and poisoned shaft,
protect me, Christ, till thy returning.]
Christ be with me, Christ within me,
Christ behind me, Christ before me,
Christ beside me, Christ to win me,
Christ to comfort and restore me,
Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ in quiet, Christ in danger,
Christ in hearts of all that love me,
Christ in mouth of friend and stranger.
I bind unto myself the Name,
the strong Name of the Trinity,
by invocation of the same,
the Three in One, and One in Three.
Of whom all nature hath creation,
eternal Father, Spirit, Word:
praise to the Lord of my salvation,
salvation is of Christ the Lord.

God is Bigger Than We Think

The Atlantic Ocean is immense in its beauty and unfathomable in its power.  Even those who know it well, from years of living near or on it, can not know it all.  It can not be contained in any of the ways that humans contemplate.

File5

Yet there are those who attempt to keep it to themselves, as though, by refusing to share its beauty and its power, they gain more importance and more power for themselves.

We drove the coastal road for many miles, just hoping for glimpses of the ocean, and we found a few.  But there are miles in the residential areas that are blocked by hedges and trees, presumably to reduce erosion, and to insure privacy for the residents.  The ocean becomes their private playground, not available to the common folk.

File6

Gated entries add to the reminder that strangers are not welcomed here.

File7

But, every now and then, a public beach invites all, and reminds us that something so vast and wonderful cannot be owned, isolated, or contained.

I wonder what would happen if our hearts, and our churches, and our lives would throw open the gates, tear down the hedges, and welcome ALL into God’s wonderful ocean of love.    How many lonely, lost, forsaken people might enter a safari into grace and peace.

ME? PRAY?

If you are like me, prayer is hard to define.  I have been told it is everything from the liturgy we share at Mass to simply having a conversation with God.

image So rather than try define prayer, a few years ago I decided to just engage prayer as a matter of daily living.  My “prayer life” has taken many turns and twists along the way.  To try and share all that I have discovered would take too long, so let me just share a few thoughts about my personal prayer life.

My prayer life really can be summed up as simply conversing with God.  I like to talk to God.  I delight in having a conversation with my Heavenly Father.  but before you think I am a bit batty in the sense that “Oh yeah, she talks to God and God talks back”, I’ll share what I mean here.

Many years ago, I discovered a concept that Brother Lawrence talked about – Practicing the presence of Jesus.  I simply looked forward to each day believing that God, through Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit, walked with me everywhere I went.  I would then carry on a conversation with God just as I would if my sister, friend, or co-worker was standing or sitting with me.

Next, I engaged the wonderful gift of the imagination.  I would try to envision, or imagine, what God would say back.  I would listen for a still small voice entering into the conversation.

I was, and am, often amazed at the type of answers or responses I seem to come up with.  Time and time again, particularly if I was seeking a definitive direction in life, the answer would become clear, through this exchange with God.

And then I would often sit with paper and pen in hand, and write out my “conversations” with God.  Looking at them on paper would usually yield a clarity to life’s complicated maneuverings.

Another way of praying for me was to follow at the end of each day, the directions of St.Ignatius Loyola.  St. Ignatius utilized what is called the “examination of conscience”.

The first step is to call to mind all that I am grateful for from the day.  A remembrance of the simple things.  The gentle breeze refreshing my spirit.  The eagle that soared over head.  A kind word spoken by a friend.  An opportunity to do something I love.  These are the things I can recall when I am having a “bad” day.

Second step is to review the day and see where God was present, and where I may have over looked God.  It is often easier to see God in the past than in the present.  By reflecting, I can see just how much God really is involved in my daily routines.  And as I reflect, I find myself responding with a smile, and a sense of real joy.  Yes, God was present while making a tuna fish sandwich for lunch.  And God was there when I laughed with a small child being “dragged” by a dog twice her size on their walk.  And God was there in so many ways in every event.

Third, I ask for grace in areas where I turned away from God and sinned.   I seem to fall short more than I wish, but even then God is right there to pick me up, brush me off, and set me on the path again.  God really is a loving and compassionate Father.

Fourth, I ask God’s forgiveness, and if I have wronged someone else, I seek their forgiveness as well as soon as I can.  God is quick to forgive, and slow to anger.  Sometimes not always are my friends.  I ask them anyway.

Fifth, and last, I ask for grace to see God more clearly the next day.  I want to daily draw closer and closer to God so that one day, I will find myself at His home instead of mine.  And while I journey in this life, I don’t want to waste one minute out of touch with my Heavenly Father.

So as I go through this Season of Lent, I will continue to dig deeper into the wonderful mysteries of God, drawing my breath from His, and filling my days delighting in His love, presence, and word.

Stupid is as …

Mark 9:2-9

Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain apart, by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no one on earth could bleach them. And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, who were talking with Jesus. Then Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” He did not know what to say, for they were terrified. Then a cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud there came a voice, “This is my Son, the Beloved; listen to him!” Suddenly when they looked around, they saw no one with them any more, but only Jesus.  As they were coming down the mountain, he ordered them to tell no one about what they had seen, until after the Son of Man had risen from the dead.

I remember a time when my son was about 10.  We were having lunch with my parents in Morgantown, WV, at a local restaurant when Don Nehlen, the Head Coach for the WVU Mountaineer Football Team, walked in.  He stood near us as we all waited for our imagetable.

My father, a BIG WVU fan, approached Mr. Nehlen with my son in tow and introduced themselves to the Coach.  The Coach was very nice and talked with my son for a few moments.

Then the Coach turned to me and asked if my son was going to be one of the future stars of the WVU Mountaineer Team.  I said something like “I don’t know, but how ‘bout them Giants?”  Off subject.  Stupid.  Flabbergasted comment of some sort.  That seems to happen to me more often than I care to acknowledge.

When I suddenly find myself in the company of well known, or highly successful people, I often feel so inadequate.  I make dumb remarks, at the same time trying to sound knowledgeable and “important”.  I end up falling over my two left feet.

I suspect that is what happened to Rocky.  You know Rocky.  His name is also Peter.  He is the one whom Jesus said He would build His Church upon.  “Your name is Peter, and upon this Rock I will build my Church.”  Peter, a sharp, hard edged, stone.  Rocky for short.  I digress.

Rocky, I mean Peter, in the midst of the glory of God, standing with the pillars of the Law and the Prophets, and Jesus, the fulfillment of both, misses it and stumbles.  “Stupid is as Stupid does”, said Mrs. Gump.

So Peter wants to celebrate the Festival of Booths or Tabernacles right then and there.  In the midst of God’s glory.  Do something minor in the middle of something major.

So my question is, why is it so hard, when we are in the midst of God’s presence to keep our mouths shut, and our ears and eyes open?

The admonition of God in this story is to LISTEN to Jesus.  He is the Beloved, the Son of the Most High.  Much harder to do in practice than in theory.

It’s All About Relationship.

We have found our church home.

File12

After weeks of wandering, and having visited six or more congregations, we have returned to, and are settling into, St. David’s in the Pines Episcopal Church in Wellington, Florida.

It is not about the preaching, although that is biblical and well done.  It is not about the music, even though it is wonderful.  It is not about the style of worship, which feels like a foreign land to me.  It is not about the programs and activities, although we are welcomed to participate.

It is about the people.  Father Steven Thomas is gentle and compassionate, like our West Virginia pastor, Bert Coffman.  The congregation is phenomenal. Their love for the needy and disadvantaged is evidenced in many ways.  A diverse group, of many races and ethnic origins, they share the love of Christ with one another, and with the stranger, who is a stranger only once.  I know few names, as yet, but I recognize the faces, and they smile and speak in recognition of my face.  Today, walking down the aisle after worship, I was startled as a gentleman caught my arm and hugged me, saying, “Have a wonderful week!”

And that is why, for this portion of my personal safari, St. David’s is my home.  Loving relationship is the answer to many of life’s questions.

The Heavens Declare…Glory

20120102_6

This is a photo of the moon, through the tree shading our patio, as it dances with the planet Jupiter, the tiny light spot slightly to the right and under the moon.  As we enter the second month of a new calendar year, there are some who experience fear because they see impending doom in the Mayan calendar.  Concerned by circumstances beyond their control, they are afraid to draw a deep breath until history has proved the doomsday prophets wrong.

I am so sorry that some will be wasting this great time, by living in fear.  How wonderful it is to know that the One who hung the moon and formed the planets is also the One who controls time and holds our destinies in his loving hands.

“I have..,not cast you off.  Do not fear, for I am with you.  Do not be afraid, for I am your God.  I will strengthen you.  I will help you.  I will hold you up with my hand”.  (Isaiah 41:8-10)  Live in the light, my friends, and let your safari be a journey of delight.  It ultimately leads you HOME.
