A Review of “Love and War” by authors John and Stasi Eldredge

I have just finished my first reading of Love and War by John and Stasi Eldredge. I say first reading, because the book deserves a second reading and more.

Three things caught me as I read their latest offering.

First, the writing is typical of both John and Stasi. Their desire and passion for God, their marriage, their children, and their world is abundantly evident throughout the book. They communicate a sense of urgency to connect in a meaningful and powerful way with their Heavenly Father. And through that connection with God, they connect to each other and beyond.

The second is that this is a wonderful starting point for every couple, whether they have been married six days or sixty years. The lessons learned in this reading are timeless. John and Stasi bring brutal honesty to their story. They show us that even the most successful of couples have their times of doubt and struggle.

For me, this honesty was probably the most refreshing stream of the book. So many “marriage manuals” talk as if all of married life, centered in Christ, is wonderful, successful, enduring, and endearing.

Not so with John and Stasi. Their brutal honesty brings hope to all of us, married or single, in the endurance of relationships when built upon solid foundations. They show us principles that serve as a solid foundation, rather than shifting sand.

The third is a realization that this is not just a marriage manual, but a guide to building meaningful and lasting relationships. As a single person, I realize that not everyone will find their partner for life, or even for a season. But the lessons taught here provide solid biblical principles applicable in all relationships.

These relationships can be between siblings, parent and child, social networks, church relationships, significant others, and even business dealings. They can be applied in a congregational setting between parishioners and pastors. The list is endless.

While I may not agree with everything they write, or the conclusions they draw, I do agree with the principles they share and the overall premises of the book. God loves you and me with an enduring love. He is fighting for us on every front. He desires a solid connection with us. We are His beloved. And in the end, God wins with us at His side!

Here are the tools to help you fight, hand in hand with another, alongside your King!

Four out of five stars.
